Sri Lankan society is a multi cultural and multi ethnic society. The local tradition and culture of
Sri Lanka came under the influence of the colonial rule of British, Dutch and Portuguese powers. Traders from Arabian countries also settled here. As it is believed that immigrants from India traveled to the island of
Sri Lanka and settled there. The ethnic groups of
Sri Lanka consist of mainly of the Sinhalese and the Tamils. Other groups of people are Veddah, Burghers and Moors. The society in
Sri Lanka comprise of people from different religion. Buddhism is the main religion of this country. Hinduism, Christianity and Islam religions are other noted religions of
Sri Lanka.
In the
Sri Lankan society, Sinhalese and Tamil are two of the mostly spoken languages. Use of English is also prevalent in this society. A community of people converse in creole Malay. Variant form of Creole, Dutch and Portuguese is spoken by the Burgher community in
Sri Lanka. The two official languages of this country are Tamil and Sinhalese.
The total population of
Sri Lanka is about 21, 324, 791. About 90% of the total population is literate. Compulsory Schooling system as well as free education system has been introduced for the children.
