Sri Lankan FilmsMost of the Sri Lankan films are made in Sinhalese language. Movies in Tamil language are also directed and produced here. The films produced in this country have influences of Hindi films and Tamil films of India. Kadawunu Poronduwa was the first film to be produced in Sri Lanka. Ranmuthu Duwa was the first color film of this country. Nidhanaya is a reputed Sinhalese film produced in Sri Lanka that received a number of international awards. Wekande Walauwa was the first Sri Lankan film to be sent for the Academy Awards under the category of Best Foreign Language film.
Lester James Peiris is a renowned film maker in Sri Lanka. Another noted director of Sri Lankan films is Vimukthi Jayasundara who won Camera d’Or award for his film. Asoka Handagama is known for controversial issues of his directed films in Sri Lanka. Popular Sri Lankan films like Samanala thatu, Sooriya Arana and Hiripoda wessa are directed by Prasanna Vithanage.
Sri Lankan films deals with different subjects. They portray family relations, love stories or any social issues. Many films have been directed based on recent conflict between Tamil Tigers and Sri Lankan Army. Some of the best films of history of Sri Lankan films are Nidhanaya, Viragaya, Parasathumal, Dadayama, Thun Mang Handiya etc.
