Sri Lanka is an island country located in the Indian Ocean. This country is separated from India by Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar. This country is situated to the south west of the Bay of Bengal. A chain of limestone shoals is found just above the sea level between the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. According to Hindu mythology this bridge was built to connect Sri Lanka with India during the time of Rama Chandra. This bridge is named as Adam’s Bridge.
The geographical location of Sri Lanka is 5 degree 55 minute to 9 degree 50 minute North latitude and 79 degree 42 minute to 81 degree 52 minute East longitude. From east to west this island country stretches for about 227 Km and from north to south it is about 434 Km. Sri Lanka covers a total area of about 65, 610 Sq. Km. The coast line of this country runs for a distance of about 1,340 Km.
The terrain of Sri Lanka is mostly low. At places the terrain is flat to rolling plain. Mountainous region is also seen in the south central interiors of Sri Lanka. The highest point in this country is Pidurutalagala of an elevation of 2,524 meter. Among the total land area in Sri Lanka about 13.96% is used as arable land and 15.24% are used for cultivation. Rest of the 70.8% is for other usage. The total amount of irrigated land in Sri Lanka is about 7,430 Sq. Km.
