Media in Sri LankaRadio Ceylon – the national radio station of Sri Lanka is considered to be the oldest radio station in Asia. Edward Harper started Radio Ceylon in 1923 and it is at present maintained by the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. This radio station is one of the popular stations in Asia that broadcasts programs in Sinhalese, Hindi, Tamil and English. A number of radio stations started in Sri Lanka after 1980 that became popular among their listeners.
With Independent Television Network, broadcast television was introduced in Sri Lanka for the first time. In the beginning the television stations were controlled by the state but since 1992, privately owned television networks were also introduced. Satellite and cable television have become popular in Sri Lanka. Global television networks from different parts of South-east Asia, United States and Europe have gained good number of viewers in Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka publications are brought out in Tamil, Sinhalese and English languages. Lankadeepa, Divayina and Lakbima are some of the popular publications in Sinhalese. Popular English publications include The Sunday Observer, Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times. Uthayan and Dinakaran are published in Tamil in Sri Lanka. Internet has also become a popular medium in Sri Lanka. Editions of many Sri Lankan newspapers can be read online.
