Adams peakAdam’s Peak is a fascinating tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. This lofty peak is referred as Adam’s Peak as it is believed that when Adam was cast off from heaven, he first set foot in this region. It is also known as Sri Pada as it is believed that this sacred place has Lord Buddha’s foot prints when he visited Kelaniya.
The Adam’s Peak is also known as the Butterfly Mountain or the Samanalakande as according to a belief butterflies fly to this area before dying. According to other beliefs, the foot print is said to be of Lord Shiva. Some others believe it to be of St. Thomas. According to Muslim beliefs, Adam’s Peak is the place where the first man set his foot on earth.
Adam’s Peak is about 2243 meter from the sea level. Adam’s Peak is also known as a famous center of pilgrimage. From December to May, it receives many pilgrims. Vesak Festival is observed here during the month of May. Tourists and pilgrims climb up the innumerable steps to reach the Adam’s Peak or the Sri Pada. The scenic beauty of sun rise at the Adam’s Peak is worth seeing. According to legends, King Parakramabahu and King Nissanka Malla gave shelter to pilgrims in this mountainous area.
